Athens (TJ): 19 teams, 6 of the tournament variety at Blind Pig on Wednesday. The game saw average scores throughout the night. United(4) take first, Ears(9) second, and B8shaq(4) end up in third. Phasers(3), Alliance(1), and Kitten Mittens(6) pull up the rear.
Carrollton (Bryan): A game that begged for big scores crashed and burned in the 4th quarter as three non-tourney teams stump Cartel. Dirt Road (81) overtakes Razor Burn (81) in OT and 3 Radishes (78) settle for 3rd. Cartel limps to 65 (2) and no other tournament teams show up.
Atlanta (Bobby): More from the cruel and unusual trivial files…
Ran with TJ’s game tonight @ Brewhouse and the scores appreciated the new author.
8 Tournament teams in the house, so the level of talent was as deep as it gets.
Without going into dramatic re-enactments, Muffins were in Finals form and posted a 122 (8)
Buckhead Rednecks sneak away with wiley 2nd @ 103 (4)
Oedipus plays come from behind for 3rd – 101 (8)
Kramerica throw away at least 15 points and finsh @ 93 (6)
BBvBoE suffer another devastating blow w/ 88 (9)
(fwiw, BBvBoE had 98 @ the 2 minute warning. At least this #20 was nasty and nefarious)
Gluttons play well but can’t cash in 20 – 83 (6)
FFA are just slightly off lately with 78 (6)
(the thing about Fulmer is they play every game without Matt & Sam. Factor that into your evaluation of them come Super Saturday)
P-Value may still be celebrating their big game Monday – 43 (4)
My Hot Boss made an appearance tonight.
For the uninitiated – My Hot Boss was responsible for one of the great moments in MTM Finals History.
It was @ the old Jeffrey’s in Suwanee and MHB were getting their asses handed to them (maybe MTMVII?)
Somewhere around question #17, the entire table in unison yelled “HEY BOBBY”
There, in the center back portion of the room sat MHB, all 10 of them – on their cell phones.
It was the 2nd ever DQ during the finals and the 1st ever ‘Suicide’.
If I recall correctly, the room gave them a round of applause…
Canton (Brent): 15 teams at Johnny’s, with a surprisingly strong effort from the non-tournament teams. Still, the MTM’s doggedly pulled away from the pack in the 4th.
Ray-Ray’s Partay missed #1 for 7 points and then were the ONLY team (0ut of 15) to not get at least 6 points on the #5 comic strips question. And then… Well, then, they only dropped 10 more points throughout the game, and rolled to a win (100).
Challenged (96) take 2nd with their first truly impressive effort of the tournament. I’ve been waiting for that… If they had felt more confident on #10, they win with 104, but they played smart, and were rewarded for it.
Sniping 3rd was Answer To This Question with 91. Nicely done.
Hazel Destroy (68) sends the lovely Sarah Darby to play by herself, and she outscored her team’s best score of the week by 20+. And the 68 is misleading – she entered #20 with 73 points and was distracted by a phone call… If she’s in the zone and focused, she gets that mythology question and finishes with 93… Hey, the team name fits!
Migrating Coconuts (67) were winning at halftime with 40, but fizzled out in the 4th. As usual, they put together 3 really good quarters of trivia and take the other one off…
Red Dead Samurai (84) took the lead in the 3rd and were in 1st after 19 questions, but they couldn’t nail down #20. A 105 would’ve been nice, but Red’s just happy to have the full team back in town.
Grayson (Darby): Meanwhile in Grayson, only 2 tournaments teams in the house with 7 others. In the end, #9 (5 participants) in overtime beat Douche Canoe after ending regulation tied with 89. Experience earn 3rd with 73.
Remember, I am trying to get a Pairs game together this Saturday at Uncle Peppers in Ball Ground. The fee is $20 and we are trying to make sure we have a minimum of 15 teams. If you are planning on playing leave a comment in the Triviaheads thread on facebook regarding the game. I’ll make a decision Thursday night if the game will be on or not.
(Note from Brent: Darby didn’t give me an attendance figure for Experience, but at this point in the cumulative, it’s not particularly important. I guessed 4, because that’s what I think they generally bring to Grayson…)
Brent: Speaking of events, we’ve also got Pairs Game III coming up on the FCT schedule, on Super Saturday Eve, April 20, at 8:30 in Avondale. Entry fee is $30 for that game… You can also earn a free entry into Pairs Game III by playing in Darby’s contest in Ball Ground this Saturday. Take it from me – Uncle Pepper’s has good pizza and calzones, and they’re absurdly cheap. Please don’t tell them, lest this deliciousness become priced like competitors…
Also on the docket, please remember RSVP’s are due by the end of this week (Sunday). You are submitting 2 numbers. One is an ideal # if this game were being held in a convention center or something and there’s no chair limits and you could have any amount of people you want, whether it’s 5, 50, or 500. The next is the # of chairs you’re willing to buy, or you can say you’ll buy up to a certain amount. For example, we’d prefer 12 chairs, but if we only qualify for 6, we’re willing to purchase up to 3. Or, we’d prefer 12 chairs, and we’ll buy as many as we need to in order to reach 9 people, regardless of how many we qualify for. Make sense?
We’re only 9 days away from MTM XI. Now’s the time to start shoring up those commitments from people. There is a penalty for unused seats at the finals, because chairs are hard to come by. If I could find a complete stranger to join my team last year the morning of the tournament – yes, that happened – to fill an empty chair, the rest of you can as well…
