MTM XI, Week 9 FINAL!

Etta James Memorial Music Game (Bobby): So Friday night we debuted our 4th specialty game of the tournament season; the Etta James Memorial Music Championship, which was professionally hosted by Brewhouse of Avondale.

98 players in the house, which is north of what I predicted – so that was nice.

Not a bad team in attendance.

This game was difficult, and by difficult I mean grueling…

It was long, it was mentally taxing, there were wild swings on the leader board, in short – everything you’d expect from a game of this magnitude and caliber.

The one team that avoided the roller coaster was Buckhead Rednecks (89 – 10) who played a consistent, smart, and disciplined game. They were rewarded with $300 cash, and extra seat at the finals, 18 bonus points, and most importantly the Etta James Memorial Crystal.

Fulmer’s Fat Ass (88 – 9) are a worthy 2nd. The lone difference between the top two being a single bidding gaffe or two, otherwise they ran close all night.

Alliance (78 – 5)rise to the top of a wild pack at the end. Consider – Alliance were in 11th place at halftime and went scored exactly ZERO 2nd qtr points. That is a gritty finish and a well deserved 3rd.

Experience (75 – 7) are Best of the Rest. They’ll tell you they were all over the place and could have found another 6 to 10 points, and they’d be right.

Also –

Kramerica – 73 – 8

Capt Geech – 68 – 3

BBvBoE – 53 – 7

#9 – 45 – 13

United – 44 – 5

Oedipus – 44 – 9

Ray – Ray – 42 – 7

Coconuts – 37 – 5

Stepdads – 35 – 5

Muffins – 15 – 4

I can honestly say there wasn’t a single team that didn’t impress me on at least a single answer or two.

The game was a stern test of music acumen.

We have perhaps a dozen music gurus in our community that I would take to war in a music trivia game anywhere in the country.

We have another 40-50 that know a given era or genre so well I can’t get an incorrect answer out of them when their subject comes up.

I mean, guys like Matt w/ FFA, or Geoff w/ Oedipus.. Brent w/ Alliance, Finch w/ United, Rod w/ United… these guys are money in almost any genre..

Sprinkle in Quen from Kramerica, who has maybe missed a dozen 80s songs in as many years.. and perhaps ONE metal song ever.. Rod, who can recite every fact of every Ska, alternative, punk, Rockabilly, and surf instrumental ever recorded or contemplated, Holly – who does not miss pop, punk, alternative and go toe to toe with most on everything else, Greg from Alliance – who has missed exactly one song he has ever heard recorded between 1955 and 1974… and I could make this list 4 times as long as it already is…

I’d say winning this game will be every bit as difficult henceforth as winning a St Patrick’s Cup.

Thanks for a superior debut, thanks for the compliments on the new ‘Etta’ idol, ‘Etta’ crystal, ‘Etta’ artwork, and my fancy cowboy hat…

Canton (Darby): As I showed up at a virtually empty venue 20 mins before show time, I was concerned that we might not even have a show. My heart was warmed with 8 teams showing up. Thanks. Bobby Brown vs BoE earns 1st with 78 (5). Seoul Sisters takes 2nd with 66 (5). #9 finishes 3rd with 61 (1) and pays for the Uncle Peppers pairs game. Red Dead Samarai scores 50 (3). McNutski 33 (2).

Athens (Bobby): Blind Pig saw a respectable crowd for Easter with 13 teams in attendance, including 9 playing very meaningful tournament games.

Alliance (3) were a buzz saw, shredding this game to little tiny bits.

103 as we entered question #20 and primed to claim the top single game score of the tournament. Their nearest competitor was Ears with 84, meaning under normal circumstances all Alliance would need would be a minimum 2 point bid to skip away with a 105 & the win.

The cumulative being what it is presently, this was JuJu dangling a BIG – FAT lead in their face over BBvBoE & United heading into the final week… All that work, all those weeks, the travel, the highs, the lows… Would they take the bait and put their nearest competitors to the sword?

The answer is no, but they did win the game with a correct 8 point bid and a very nice 111.

Ears (74 – 7) get jobbed on the final question and B8Shaq (8) are the fortunate benefactors with a 2nd place 101.

Michael Bolton AGAIN swipe bonus points with a very nice 95 and 3rd.

also –

T2RB – 68 – 7
Phasers – 38 – 3
Rash – 51 – 3
Kittens – 49 – 3
Fact Hunt – 38 – 8
United – 54 – 5

Amici was also busy in spite of the ‘Bro Day’ holiday. The level of competition is a shocking thing to random teams off the street and by the 3rd quarter 4 had decided to focus more energy on drinking and smoking cigarettes on the sidewalk.

Again Alliance (3) play a ridiculous game, but this time a reach on #10 allowed Ears (3) to play from the front for the 2nd half, justice after the atrocity @ Blind Pig.

In the end, Ears hold on to enough points to post a 110, Alliance will ‘waste’ a 109 and settle for the bonus points, United (5) take 3rd with 103.

Rash 100 – 5
Kittens 77 – 4
Phasers 64 – 4
B8Shaq 55 – 4
T@RB 60 – 4
Fact Hunt 28 – 6

We will be asking you for two RSVPs this week in a separate post on the Triviaheads Page.

One is how many people you would bring to the finals if you could.
The other is how many of those seats you’d be willing to pay $10 for if you don’t earn that many.

Remember people, your RSVP is a HARD COUNT. There is no excuse for having an empty chair at the finals.

I can not stress to you enough how important that is.

Make sure someone is hawking Triviaheads & Fullcontacttrivia.com from this point forward. Ignorance is not an excuse for anything at the finals.

Also, the Pairs game has been posted – $30/pair. All DJs are taking entry fees NOW.

Good Luck, the final week (#10) begins tomorrow…
