MTM XI, Week 8 FINAL

Athens (Bobby): Short update to end week 8..

Pig – B8Shaq (6) & Alliance (3) duel in OT with B8shaq sharing the win with a 92.
Michael Bolton steal bonus points from Rash (72 5), Fact Hunt (73 6), Kittens (88 3), Phasers (78 4), T2RB (90 8), Ears (81 6), & United (80 3)

A solid room full of postable scores with one or two answers separating the entire group. Very good game.

Amici – United (5) went into ‘Old School United’ mode and unleashed a Beserker style ass whooping on all in attendance.

122 !

They underbid on question #2, got stuck with using their 3 point bid on #4… and that’s it, have a nice evening and please remember to tip your waitresses and bartenders…

In the shadow of this Biblical wrath Alliance(3) pieced together what would normally be called a very good 105 to keep the lead in the cumulative, and B8Shaq (2) play well @ Amici – a rarity indeed, and collect 3rd with 99.

Rash (95 5)
Fact Hunt (72 6)
Kittens (72 4)
Ears (95 2)

So the big horse that roared past you on the leader board is United.. and they’re doing all this without arguably their best player. (Gulp)

Canton (Darby): Meanwhile at LaBamba…

A small crowd tonight made the trip to LaBamba. Only four teams in the house tonight, but all were top tier tournament teams: #9, Bobby Brown v BoE, Seoul Sisters, and the ineligible Hazel Destroy who I think should start turning in answers with an asterisk.

The first round was easy with #9 and Bobby Brown having perfect scores. Bobby Brown was perfect through seven and #9 perfect through eight with everyone missing what I thought was the easiest question of the night (shows you what I know…not much).

At half time, Bobby Brown had a 1 point lead (31-30) and that lead stayed through the 3rd after an annoying #15 (61-60). They matched each other point for point through 19 and Bobby Brown led 79-78, Hazel Destroy had 52, and Seoul Sisters playing short handed only had 34.

Final question tonight was another TV question of the same variety from Thursday. Bobby Brown v BOE was horrified when they heard the category and knew I had designed it just for them. This time though, they nailed it, earned redemption, and the 9 Bonus Points.

Final Scores:
Bobby Brown v BoE 99 (6 attendance)
#9 98 (4 attendance)
Hazel Destroy 72 (4 attendance)
Seoul Sisters 33 (2 attendance)

Canton Music Trivia (Brent): Tune Trivia got simplified as we approach the eve of the 1st Etta James game, and I gave teams a manageable but challenging enough game to get them ready for next Friday.  A room small on attendance (8 teams, with only 5 really serious contenders) but heavy on music trivia talent featured Migrating Coconuts, Much Ado About Muffins, Oedipus & The Momma’s Boys, Red Dead Samurai, and Challenged.

Halftime was a stumbling block built around one of my favorite bits of music trivia, and Red, despite having the old-timers out of town, found themselves in 1st with 33 after some early taunting from Oedipus.  Oedipus managed to regroup, however, and stormed through the rest of the game, leaving everyone in their wake, cruising to a win with an impressive 96 points.

Muffins (49) were the clear #2 for most of the night, but stumbled on #20.  This opened the door for Challenged (66) to snipe 2nd, and Brady, flying solo, to steal 3rd for the Coconuts (58).

#20 was a songwriters question, the 2nd of the night, and originally I had the two questions switched.  If I asked it as originally written, Oedipus likely finishes with between 66-76 points, and Red would likely have placed, maybe even won.  Instead, Red (39) finishes with a disappointing 5th place.  Sorry, Red.

Alright, as we finish up week 8, there are 2 weeks left to play.   The leaderboard is finally starting to sort itself into groups:

The Big 3:  Alliance (918), United (907), and Bobby Brown (902) are all within 16 points of one another.  The next closest team to the trio is 37 points behind.  With just two weeks to play, it’s going to take a Herculean effort from another contender AND a miserable week from one of these for another team to get into the top 3.

The 800 Club: Muffins (865), #9 (853), Red Dead Samurai (843), Ray-Ray’s Partay (843), and Oedipus & the Momma’s Boys (841) can still jockey for position and chairs, but all are virtually guaranteed at least 10 chairs at the finals at this point.  Those 5 teams will likely not move up or down the scoreboard except among one another.

10/8 group: The last two spots for 10 chairs is a bit more tenuous, with FFA (768) and T2RB (757) clinging to small leads over 8-chair positioned B8shaq (744).  Ears (734) and Seoul Sisters (721) could still make something happen, although 10 chairs might be a long-shot for the Sista’s or Angry Planners (718).  These teams don’t appear to be in danger of losing their 8 seat status.

The “Anything Could Happen” Group:  The largest group of teams, and while we won’t see the lowest team in the group rise to the top, there’s so much possible movement that it’s hard to draw the line anywhere.  One 8-chair position IS up for grabs – the one held currently by Kramerica (676).  Looking to take down Kramerica are the 6-chair teams: Buckhead Rednecks (657), Pabst Playboys (649), Kitten Mittens (638) Hazel Destroy (631), and Experience (624).  Waiting for THOSE teams to stumble are the 4-chair teams, right on their heels: Stepdads (620), Boston Braves (617), Rash (611), Phasers (600), and Challenged (599).  That’s right – all 5 teams are within 25 points of an extra chair at the finals.  That’s something worth playing for over the next two weeks.  But we can’t stop there, as the 3-Chair group is right behind them.  And the 2-Chair group behind them.  Basically, you can still move up into a higher chair bracket.

Alright, scoreboard time!
