Little 5 Points (Bobby): If it is possible to be in 2nd place in the cumulative, be gaining on the leaders – albeit slowly, and still have *the Funk* on you, Bobby Brown has managed it of late…
Mind you, their high standards make it difficult to diagnose remotely, but from my impartial POV from behind the mic it is definitely something I have noticed.
They carry leads late into games and manage to collect a slew of 3rds and 4ths… They are maddeningly close to catching Alliance and putting the screws to them once and for all, and frankly, Alliance has left the door unattended the last week or so.. and yet they just can’t seem to drop the hammer.
It’s similar to what Oedipus was dealing with earlier in the tournament, but the stakes are slightly higher at this point and the tolerances are a bit less obvious unless viewed over time…
To their credit, BBvBoE have handled it the only way possible – with stoic reserve and workmanlike determination… They play, they collect their scraps, they play again.. and again…
This level of dedication has kept them viable and has respectfully irritated Alliance and a few teams that are trying to reel in the Board..
So they roll into Wednesday night @ the Brewhouse, our marquis game for depth and difficulty with jaws set and reserves of focus and determination..
They hammer down 49 @ halftime.. solid
I predict the inevitable unraveling will be glorious..
Kramerica relegates them to 2nd (78-75)by the start of the 4th and I taunt them unmercifully…
“…the slow descension to 3rd is clearly underway…”
By the 2 minute warning, they have doggedly regained their lead and sit poised to snatch the result they’ve been seeking for weeks now, 93 – 92 over Kramerica …
In the end, it is an almost full strength Kramerica that take the brass ring with an impressive 112 (10)
The surprise 2nd place team is Gluttons, who have recruited MTM II MVP Holly Hyde, and from the looks of it are glad with 108 (7) and Muffins do what Muffins do with a 104 (9)
BBvBoE are left to sift through the ashes of another near miss – 92 (10), although this one may sting a little more than the others..
Still, they have collected 6 bonus points this week already and are sitting on a base-line 92 – this is why their *funk* isn’t so obvious to many watching from a distance… And there is plenty of week left to play …
FFA – 96 (5)
P-Value – 44 (4)
((P-Value are going through that thing that every veteran team already knows… the early excitement has worn off and it’s a battle for survival. The one thing we all learn about MTM is it is more of a marathon than a sprint. I’m rooting for P-Value to drop anchor and post a few of those impressive early tournament scores)))
Donkey – 39 (3)
Oedipus – 47 (5)
Athens (TJ): 20 teams pile into the Blind Pig on Wednesday and most of them stuck around for the entire night of up and down trivia. The first half of the game was much harder than the second and the halftime scores showed just that. 8 tournament teams in the house with T2RB(4) taking first, Alliance(2) taking second, and Fact Hunt (10) taking third. B8shaq(6), Beaver Feaver(5), United(3), Ears(10), and Phasers(3) all play wel…l for the most part. The rest…
Canton (Brent): Johnny’s remains a strange tournament venue, with very little travel – as most of you know, Gainesville teams are really the only ones without a home game on Wednesday, so nobody travels to lonely Canton. Still, with 13 teams, it wasn’t a cakewalk for understaffed tournament regulars Migrating Coconuts, Challenged, Seoul Sisters, and Red Dead Samurai.
A 1st time team, the Bayside Tigers, managed to win with an impressive 96. They sat at an open booth and despite my skepticism, were 100% honest according to my spies who were in close proximity. I hope they return to trivia. There’s obviously some talent there… 2nd place was Flogging Murphys with 93, who were part of the Cantonese Pints team that took part in WCOT III. Seoul Sisters (70) seemed poised to toss up a 91 but sadly couldn’t get the keyboard question on #20. They are seemingly ALWAYS a question away from big points… That opened the door for Challenged (90) to snipe 3rd and win some overdue house cash. I’ve been warning of Challenged’s triumphant return, and tonight was a big step. For them to score 90 without their best player in attendance is a very nice sign.
I said goodbye to a couple members of Red Dead Samurai (80) as they venture off to Korea… Red’s just trying to keep the ship afloat for the next 10 days while several of their key players are out of town.
Migrating Coconuts (65) manage to post a high score for the week with their usual Wednesday “we’re just here to party” squad… This will surely infuriate Brady.
Grayson (Darby): In a game where very few felt like they were clicking on all cylinders (including yours truly) #9 survived a tough night of trivia with first place 73 (3 part points). 2nd place goes to Experience with 64 (6 part). 3rd place goes to Pabst Playboys 45 (6 part). And we will all go home now and never speak of it again…
Carrollton (Bryan): Cartel (47, 2), Angry Planners (71,3), and Sauced (77,4) all make appearances but non tourny teams sweep the game with Dozen Really Matter (95), She Told Me It Was Razor Burn (88), and And In Last Place (83) claiming money spots.
