Canton (Brent): 16 teams in the house tonight, featuring a whopping TEN tournament teams – Ray-Ray, Red, Buckhead Rednecks, Muffins, Challenged, Seoul Sisters, Migrating Coconuts, Bobby Brown, Hazel Destroy, and McNuttski…
The 1st Q was a scoring bonanza, designed that way because the next 3 quarters were not going to be kind to any less-than-complete teams. Rednecks seemed not only unfazed by the tough trivia, but seemed to thrive on it – by halftime they had built a 9-point lead and that lead inched larger and larger as the night wore on. It looked like Rednecks would win in a rout, but they played it safe on what wound up being a correct #20 as they didn’t want to open the door for 4th place to catch them… Instead, Ray-Ray (93) caught them. If it were a game with bigger stakes, I have to think Rednecks (88) would have gone all-in and posted the 106 they were capable of. And that would be an accomplishment given tonight’s trivia, in my humble opinion. Meanwhile, as we hit the final few weeks of the tournament, if wonder if there’s a hotter team right now than Ray-Ray. This team is light years better than the squad that used to play in Suwanee several years ago…
Red (84) make a key bidding error in the 4th quarter and allow Bobby Brown (85) to sneak into 3rd. All scores were helped by a very easy 1st quarter and a relatively easy #20, a question which rewarded them for simply sticking around through 3 quarters of hell for most teams. This game gave some of my newer teams a taste of how they should expect Super Saturday to go. No, the difficulty wasn’t the same, but tonight’s game did demand that you bid correctly throughout the evening, and made sure you cashed in the ones that you could. That’s a skill you’ll need to have honed by April 21. Alright, on to the other scores…
Muffins (69) are derailed by the halftime question and the 4th quarter…
Challenged (72) continues to improve – an impressive score given your team size this evening…
Seoul Sisters (52) could tell it just wasn’t their night by question 9.
Migrating Coconuts (55) only got 5 non-music questions right all night.
Hazel Destroy (55) had a similar evening.
McNuttski (56), more of the same.
Gainesville (Bobby): After threatening to whoop any woman’s ass that gave me shit Tuesday night, we commenced to asking trivial questions @ MoBar….
United (3) began well and looked to be in fine form after the 1st qtr, local regulars Haulin’ Balls were a half step behind them and Ears (35 – 3) rounded out a solid top 3 going into the ‘always more difficult’ 2nd qtr..
Oddly, that’d be the last we heard from Balls & Ears and United would stray pretty far adrift as well as #9 (5) rallied for the middle portion of the game and amassed a sizable lead heading into #20. Playboys (8) played a solidly consistent game save the one guffaw on ‘Russia’ and Experience (4) were inconsistent, but good enough meander into the 3 hole ((snicker… ‘3-hole’)) …
In the end, a timid bid on #20 cost Exp (71) 2nd.. AND 3rd and United (83) manage to sneak away with a win that appeared unlikely for a long stretch of the game. Playboys (79) tie #9 for 2nd, and Playboys carefully pry #9’s greedy fingers off for 2nd place money & bonus points.
Tough luck for Experience and a brutal night for a suddenly struggling Ears squad…
