MTM XI, Week 7, Monday!

Carrollton (Bryan): Bryan ran a slightly easier version of Darby’s Sunday night La Bamba game hoping to see some better scores from Carrollton (they needed it).  He got them.  Angry Planners (93) hold onto their Monday death grip, and Cartel De Jesus (80) post a decent score for 2nd.

Avondale (Bobby): 10 teams @ Avondale, which is pretty solid for a Monday night in Avondale – only 2 non- tournament teams in attendance.

Oedipus put an emphatic “!” on their win @ Amici to finish week six by beginning week 7 with the big number & result they’ve been hunting (112) . Muffins hound them from stem to stern with a 110 and even managed to sneak into the lead once or twice. Buckhead Rednecks & BBvBoE duel in OT for 3rd – 98 and the Rednecks close the deal for house cash and bonus points.

Also –

Braves – 88 (6)
#9 – 74 (1)
P-Value – 64 (3)
Donkey – 35 (8)

No Stepdads in Avondale tonight or we might’ve broken a Monday attendance record…

Canton (Brent):  10 teams playing tonight, with 7 tournament teams in attendance.

My game tonight played as expected – a scoring bonanza for 14 questions (at which point I think all 7 tourney teams still had a shot at triple digits), followed by 6 questions of death, starting with the 3rd quarter bonus.  Most teams carried strong scores into what I thought would be a pretty workable #20, but only Hazel Destroy (88) were able to connect and they sniped 1st as a result.  The sniped?  Red Dead Samurai (85), who aside from a bizarre 4-point bid on #10 and not finishing the drill on #20, played as complete a game as I’ve seen from them… Bizarre bids seem to be their calling card, surfacing in every game they play.

Ramrod continue to draw ire from tournament teams as they snipe 3rd with 77 and block performance points from Ray-Ray (67) who lost their first game in nearly 2 weeks.  They’ll fix that score later this week.  Hell, I was hoping they’d win, just so I wouldn’t have to see them in Gainesville on Thursday… grumble…

McNuttski (50) showed some improvement but the 4th quarter was hell on them, and McNuttski remains one question away from being in the money… They are seemingly ALWAYS one question away.  Last week they hit rock bottom, and tonight saw the start of a bounce-back period…

Seoul Sisters (46) were on a roll until they tried to bribe me with DVDs, a bribe I accepted as they lit their game on fire in the late going… They’ll have no problem topping that score later this week.

Challenged (38) missed an easy #10, but despite their score, still showed some signs of life. The scoresheet says what the raw totals cannot, and the scoresheets from the past 2 weeks or so are telling me Challenged is scratching and clawing their way back into form… Baby steps… This team was top-15 at MTM X and were one question away from finishing in the money… Don’t sleep on them.

Migrating Coconuts (61) were respectable and aside from dropping 2 unnecessary points in the 1st, had a perfectly bid game… Given their youth, this is unexpected, but MC have turned efficiency into their greatest weapon.  Right now I have no other team that gets more out of their answers.  They aren’t the strongest team trivia-wise, but they understand the game and they know how the scoring works… And it’s why they’ve improved drastically during this tournament.

And that brings up a good point – if you want to know how efficient your team is, go back and count unnecessarily lost points.  Find rounds where you got your 1 and blew your 7.  Find #10’s that you got right for 6 or got wrong for -5.  If you’re finding lots of points like that, fix it!  Sometimes the trivia beats you, and there’s nothing you can do… But don’t beat yourselves… Eliminate lost points, come up with actual bidding strategies that aren’t random, and you’ll take your game to the next level… Trust me on this.  I speak from experience – I made some pretty terrible decisions with bids for many, many trivia nights until finally a few things *clicked* and overnight we got better…

On deck for Tuesday:
Brent hosts at Bedoe’s in Canton (7:30)
Darby hosts at Uncle Pepper’s in Ball Ground (7:00)
Bobby is at Monkey Barrel in Gainesville (8:00)

Giddy-up!
