MTM XI, Week 6 FINAL! Record-Breaking Edition!

Canton (Darby): In a game that saw 7 tournament teams (10 total) Alliance sent a split squad to Canton and earned first place with 92 (2 attendance). 2nd goes to Red Dead Samurai with 88 (6). 3rd place goes to #9 with 79 (2). Hard luck 4th after leading at every point update 72 for Much Ado About Muffins (5).
Rest of the field:
Seoul Sisters 60 (8)
McNutski 33 (8)
Hazel Destroy 29 (4)

Remember a bonus show Tuesday at Uncle Peppers at 7:00. And a new show Friday at Old Towne Pizza in Dawsonville at 8:00.

Athens (Bobby): Sunday was brutal and gruesome from behind the microphone. It began with yours truly coming to the realization that what I thought was allergies all last week was in fact cold #2 in the span of a month. I should’ve know because I don’t have allergy problems..

So Friday night was bad and Saturday was worse and clearly God hates me because I was sick on St. Patrick’s Day. Fine.

Then I wake up Sunday afternoon and my voice is functioning at about 60%.. That’s BEFORE leaving the house – awesome.

So the Pig was pretty standard as far as attendance. Alliance was road tripping to correct some early week hiccups, BBvBoE was as well for obvious reasons, and Oedipus is still punching the clock to get right by Super Saturday.

The game was relatively low scoring and in the end, non-trivia team Michael Bolton Touches Me snipes 1st place in front of a room FULL of tournament teams with an 84. VERY solid performance and frankly I’m surprised no one has thought to offer them a 4 week contract (but I think Ears may have come to this realization at Amici, if his strategic seating position next to them at the bar is any indication…)
Alliance get 6 useful bonus points and 80 points (4) and Oedipus again finish well, but …. with 79 (8).  Also…
BBvBoE 76 (9)
T2RB 74 (4)
Phasers 72 (4)
Kittens 65 (4)
United 64 (6)
B8Shaq 58 (6)
Ears 50 (1)
Fact Hunt 39 (6)
fwiw, If Kitten Mittens had a music guy, they place in both games…

Amici..

So I roll into Amici and the voice is now at 45%. Swell.. and VOILA, my gear starts screwing up.

I switched out the mixer twice and the speaker twice.. Same shit kept happening. One second I have almost zero volume (so I turn everything up as high as I can get it.. speaker volume, master mixer volume, gain, microphone volume…) then the whole system gets a rush of whatever it has been lacking and everything is beyond too loud.. and… well, let’s just say that I was doing breathing exercises all evening in an attempt to not kill the redneck sitting in front of me… But to his credit, I think he figured that out eventually and left.

I had been sending out warnings about the game that came up @ Amici for about a week.
I told a few people last Tuesday there was one in the pipe coming down that would be ugly. Didn’t know where it would happen, but my best guess was Athens somewhere..

Toughest game of the tournament so far produced a winner @ 69 (Oedipus –  with 68 being enough for 2nd (United 6) and more outlander thievery of bonus points by Extreme Lehigh in 3rd.  Michael Bolton almost took 3rd in this game fwiw (65)
BBvBoE – 63 (8)
Ears – 62 (1)
Kittens – 57 (8)
Alliance – 55 (5)
Rash – 52 (6)
T2RB – 28 (2)
Fact Hunt – 23 (5)
B8Shaq – 9 (3)

So Oedipus finally break through with a win, which was needed for their confidence and to validate the effort they’ve been making, but the fact that it happened on such a low scoring game waters it down a tad… HOWEVER, tonight’s game @ Amici played like many MTM Finals, which is to say – tough, unforgiving, and with very few spots to stop and breathe. If any team has proven they are ‘Finals’ ready and tournament tough presently, it’s Oedipus.
Everything they’ve earned for the most part has been in front of full strength and stiff competition and every effort seems to be a baby step forward.. or at least they doggedly hold their ground and do not take steps backward.
A tip of the cap to their tournament effort so far – it has been honorable and impressive.

A Coda to the evening is that a very old record was broken @ Amici. When I say very old, I mean perhaps the oldest record on the books – Worst Score Ever.

Legendary cobbled together a -10 @ Amici, breaking the worst score ever (-9) set by the VT Sigs @ Loco’s in Buckhead in 1998..

Many of you have been playing for many years and will wonder to yourselves how is this possible. Surely there has been a sub -9.

We hold this record in high esteem and as such we have placed numerous rules for this record to be broken. 1st, there cannot be a headwind of more than 3 mph. The air conditioning (or heat) must be in a semi-functional state. The team must answer every question – earnestly (no tanking). Finally, I have the carte blanche to abandon any game I do not believe to be sincere for any reason.

In all honesty, this record hasn’t ever been broken by a team that answered every question. Period.

Usually, teams that are sucking at that level bail around halftime, or start answering only the questions they (think they) know.

So Legendary make FCT history with a legitimate -10.

We are all humbled by your achievement…

Brent:  As per my usual Sunday update, the big board tonight will have, in parentheses, your chair situation… We are 2/3 done with the tournament, and if you have designs on more chairs at the finals, now is the time to start making a push.

  1. God says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but did ‘Sauced’ decide that this would be a good week to divest themselves of two pesky seats at the Finals?
