Bobby: 172 participants at this year’s N@tM event…
It has become the ‘People’s Major’ along with MTM & WCoT.
If there is a single game I struggle to write more than this game, I am presently unaware of it.
1st off – kudos to the staff @ Brewhouse Avondale. As a former brother in service, I know that nothing shakes a restaurant to it’s bones more than the unexpected.
174 people is unexpected.
125 would have been a strain – 174 is a heart attack.
For perspective – last year’s MTMX Final had an estimated 225 people. We were as close to THAT number as we were to last year’s N@tM tally of 125.
We even had a team come off the street, that had found the game ONLINE, and had no idea what the fuck they were getting themselves into – in this year’s field (Red Dawn of the Dead)
When they entered, I spent about 5 seconds kicking around if telling them of the ‘den of freaks’ they were entering would be taken as offensive.. so I just thought ‘fuck it’ and took their money…
Down to business..
The 1st quarter wasn’t much of a challenge to most teams with 11 scoring 20 or more points.
The 2nd quarter had the desired effect of paring down scores, but in an unexpected way.
The ‘Count Orlok’ question was intended to be tough, but I had no idea 19 teams would bid 5 or more points on it. Yay Me! I love it when I get it right, even when it’s absolutely unintentional. Couple that with what I figured would be an evil #10 and we had a roomful of scores that make me comfortable (ie, the 20s & 30s)
Muffins & Ray-Ray had, at this point, already stated their intention of playing from the front of the pack.. a trend that would continue well past regulation…
The 3rd quarter was almost as tough as the 2nd and was punctuated with a downright nefarious #15.
The 4th quarter was a total misreading of difficulty by yours truly and wound up being the easiest quarter of the game, meaning – that in a very real way, the game was won (and lost) before the 3rd quarter began…
The lone exception to this was Ray-Ray’s ability to reel Muffins in to the tune of 6 points, forcing an unexpected OT.
Ray-Ray managed to keep the momentum going and eclipse a disappointed Muffins for their 1st piece of major hardware in franchise history… Now those ‘Best Dressed’ trophies will be relegated to the edges of the shelf and lid is off as far as trivial dreams..
The list of giants slain tonight by Ray-Ray is indeed impressive…
