MTM XI, Week 5, Monday update

Scores from tonight…

Canton (Brent):  11 teams at Taylor’s… Over half were tournament teams, with  #9 and Ray-Ray both making a road trip.  The two locked horns with locals Red Dead Samurai, Migrating Coconuts, McNuttski and Ramrod for much of the night.  After a fantastic 4th Q, Red had a nice 6 point lead, but #20 was a dicey question… a difficult question that just begged you to go deep on a guess.  #9 (76), being the trivia vets they are, quickly recognized a difficult question when they heard it and quickly wrote down 2 points.  Red spent a LONG time discussing their bid, and as they turn it in, I see that what was a 12 point bid had now been turned into a 16.  Ouch… Red (75) fell to 2nd.  That 5 point decision (2 on the scoreboard, 3 in performance points) was enough for Red to drop behind guess who – Number Nine – by 1 point on the scoreboard.  Now, it’s likely to be moot in the long run, as both teams will have ample opportunity to improve on the base scores.  But Red had the win tonight and gave it away.  Speaking of giving away performance points, the Migrating Coconuts (69) played smart on #20 but lost 3rd in a tie-break to Ramrod, who are making themselves into quite the roadblock for tournament teams.  They’re a good group and they could be quite helpful in a tournament situation.  They were strongly considering a buy-in until I informed them the tourney was full… If they ever get tired of pissing off other tournament teams, they could make for some fine free agents.  A 2 point bid tonight would’ve won the game for them.  Despite their regrettable tiebreak answer, Coconuts are playing with more confidence lately.  They’re playing smart, too… I’m seeing fewer dumb moves from that team than I used to.  They’re a team on the rise.

Ray-Ray (59) was held back by a terrible 2nd quarter.  McNuttski (53) was in position but couldn’t pin down #20.  They’re snakebitten and are due for a breakout at some point.  Challenged (36) still can’t get a regular rotation going.

Carrollton (Bryan): One team dominated the room in Carrollton, but possibly not the team many might have expected, especially after the events of the day on the Triviaheads page… Angry Planners (100) have been quietly dominant this tournament and they put an exclamation point on that dominance tonight with a 46 point win over 2nd place Balls of Steel.  Alliance tallies 49 and limps home with 3rd place performance points as Shane continues to play trivia until someone tells him he can’t anymore.  Cartel (30) and Sauced (35) liked the game even less…

Avondale (Bobby): Middle week of the tournament got underway @ finals & N@tM venue Brewhouse of Avondale with 7 teams in attendance, most notably the re-tooled version of Gluttons from the bottom of the table along with Oedipus, BBvBoE, & Muffins from the top.

Donkey Balls & Braves play a home venue game in an effort to start climbing out of the collective funk they’re in and Stepdads look to continue patching up the week 1 hole in their resume.

BB & Oedipus raced out to 22 point 1st quarters with Muffins in hot pursuit @ 20. The Gluttons began their new campaign with a botched 7 pointer on the Chipper Jones question – nice.

Halftime saw BB, Muffins, Stepdads, & Oedipus all sitting above 40 points and all 4 over 70 heading into the 4th.

The scores at the 2 minute warning were –
BB – 95
Oedipus – 90
Muffins – 89
Dads – 88
Gluttons – 62
Braves – 59
Donkey – 37

This set up the following final scores

BBvBoE – 115 (8)
Dads – 108 (8)
Gluttons – 82 (3)
O&MBs – 80 (8)
Braves – 79 (5)
Muffins – 79 (4)
Donkey – 36 (5)

Strong performance by BBvBoE for the second consecutive week, Stepdads continue to roll and really must be lamenting the loss of that 1st week, sneaky little 3rd from the new version of Gluttons.

Oedipus have GOT to be sick at how the last few weeks have shaken out. They’re scoring OK, but the number of points left behind are beginning to add up. Braves manage to save a post-able score with a correct #20.

No tournament team presently is in more dire need of an injection of confidence than Donkey…

  1. Carrolton ftw says:

A 46-point win? 46? Are you saying there was a 46-point gap b/w first and second? What’s going on out there?

    • Brent Blackwell says:

Yes. I put scores in parentheses for any updates that I write… Hence… Angry Planners (100) enjoy a 46-pt win over 2nd place Balls of Steel. I didn’t include BoS’s score (54) because they’re not an MTM team. Alliance (49) finished 3rd.

  2. God says:

    curb stomped …

If it were me, I’d refuse to accept any bonus points after suffering that sort of cranium dent …
