First and foremost, on Friday evening Gluttons For Punishment accepted their invitation and immediately after joining the tournament announced an impressive acquisition that should drastically improve their chances come Super Saturday: Steve & Amber Paschal, formerly of Buckhead Rednecks. Steve was a key member of last year’s championship squad while Amber is a member of the Ancient & Mysterious Order of the Tassel… Welcome to the tournament, Gluttons!
Now, for Sunday scores:
Canton (Darby): A couple of tournament teams in the house and were rewarded some points. Seoul Sisters improves their weekly score and get’s first place points with 74. Hazel Destroy earns 2nd with 63.
Carrollton (Bryan): Only 2 MTM teams in play – Cartel takes 2nd in a low-scoring game… 1st place performance points go to Alliance’s 67…
Canton (Brent): Trying out a new Tune Trivia format, one that is in strong contention to be used for the Etta James game in April, few tournament teams bothered to make the trip to see what the fuss was about. But the 4 that did all were rewarded. Kramerica (90), Coconuts (77), and Challenged (71) all improved their base scores, while Red Dead Samurai (78) picked up performance points for finishing 2nd. I commend my teams for even managing to hang with Quen, easily one of the 10 best music trivia players in all of Full Contact Trivia (and broadening that to 10 might be too kind to others in the discussion).
Athens (Bobby): 22 teams began the Athens Doubleheader @ Blind Pig and as has been the norm over the course of the 1st half of the cumulative, numerous brand names were in the room stalking big game atop the leader board.
Noteworthy among them – Oedipus, not willing to rest on a respectable 91 posted earlier in the week
Bobby Brown – chasing performance points after posting a tournament high 118 on Wed.
T2RB – prepared to make the largest leap up the ladder with their 1st score of the week, along with…
Rash – posting their 1st scores of the week
Ears – playing what amounts to a pair of home games in Athens
United – the tournament’s sleeping giant, playing below their lofty standards and still lurking around the top 5
Phasers – always nasty when full strength
B8Shaq – in form of late
Fulmer – their 1st Athens game using that name in a very long time
Kitten Mittens – much like Oedipus, not willing to rest on a mid-week 91 @ home.
and the tournament’s poster child for never letting an invitation wait – Jimmy Jams, veterans of at least 6 finals (maybe as many as 8 or 9 all names being considered) and with numerous top 10 finishes and a handful of top 5s.. STILL looking for that elusive second invitation.
The game was a sprint, as much of the week’s games have been. Points in bunches for most of the room, with tournament teams separating themselves from once-in- awhile teams in obvious and embarrassing ways..
The game shook out with 12 teams within striking range of triple digits @ the 2 minute warning and the pending invitation for the 35th and final spot being tenuously held by relative newcomers Fact Hunt with a credible 84. Jimmy Jams sat a field goal back @ 81. Fact Hunt are MTMXI rookies, but have played every week of the tournament. They are no slouches, but as with all new and young teams, their evolution has been fraught with fits & starts..
The final question was easily the toughest and most dicey of the game with only one team in the room getting it right… quickly … with me trolling the room making sure everything was above board – Fact Hunt.
Final Scores from the Pig
Fact Hunt – 104 (8)
B8Shaq – 90 (5)
United – 88 (5)
Phasers – 88 (5)
BBvBoE – 87 (7)
T2RB – 84 (11)
Oedipus 83 (4)
JJ – 80 (7)
Rash 80 (4)
Kittens – 76 (6)
FFA – 76 (3)
Ears – 74 (2)
Wednesday & Sunday @ the pig combined for 47 teams – strong.
So Fact Hunt got the usual crash course in being invited into the big dance.. they were warned that Jimmy Jams was not only actively seeking an invite, but were odds on favorites to grab it @ any Athens show they play. Fact Hunt decided to contemplate their next move, realizing they had until at least 10:30-ish before possibly watching it evaporate.
15 teams @ Amici began with the usual crush at the door to try to get in. Once I began the obnoxious trivia host schtick, those that weren’t emotionally invested in the next two hours thought better of lingering and room was made..
This game was slightly tougher to navigate but nonetheless offered plenty of opportunity. United finally woke up and looked like United (6) posting a 115
Ears (2) saved their evening with a correct #20 & 97
BBvBoE (8) grimly cling to a 3rd place that felt like much more for most of the evening – 91
FFA – 64 (3)
Rash – 65 (6)
Kittens – 60 (9)
JJ – 50 (5)
Oedipus 49 (4)
Fact Hunt – 43 (6)
The lone remaining question is the situation with qualifying and finally setting the field of 35.
Fact Hunt DID in fact accept the invite, paid the freight, and are in the field as team #35.
Bittersweet from behind the microphone.
The Bitter –
Jimmy Jams is not only one of our most talented teams, but one of the most universally liked.
They’ve been playing trivia in Athens since there WAS FCT in Athens. They stand forever as the poster children for NEVER, EVER taking an invitation into MTM for granted.
That team is sprinkled with choice free agents.. my hunch is they will find their way onto finals rosters.
The Sweet –
watching young teams emerge, improve, and join our little hobby/obsession never gets old. Fact Hunt have that same bright eyed enthusiasm that every team accepting their 1st invite manifests.. Teams like former world champion Yosef, Oedipus, Fulmer, Rash … all the way back to a young ‘Waitress Under our Table’
I am delighted that the spot we all thought would eventually be claimed by Jimmy Jams wound up in the hands of a new team. If we have to conduct business on Super Saturday w/out Chad, Katie, Alex, Kevin, etc… this is how I would choose it to go down..
So, the field is set and one of the great variables is out of the equation.
This is a week ending leader board, meaning it is an accurate reflection of the current standings.
Next week is hump week.. the official ‘back stretch’ of the cumulative…
Welcome to all and good luck…
Note from Brent: With the field of 35 set, I decided to go ahead and post what your current position is regarding chairs for the finals. In parentheses is how many chairs you are currently slated to get. Extra chairs will likely be on sale at the final game, but that’s no guarantee… If you want more people, play more trivia and play well!
*Alliance has (U+1)… U means “Unlimited” seats, only because they are in 1st place presently. The +1 will stay with Alliance, however, because it was a reward of winning the Trivia Bowl. The winner of Friday’s Night @ the Movies II game will also win an extra chair…
