Gainesville (Bobby): 15 teams played Tuesday night @ MoBar, nearly as many as had played in the previous 3 weeks combined.
Scattered among the assembled were numerous MTM XI teams.
When the dust had settled, a tough game was claimed by Ray-Ray with 73 – 9 (6). 2nd place was decided in OT between local regulars Siri is on our Team (69 – 6 (2)) & Bobby Brown 69 – 3 (5))
Many teams let opportunity pass them by in this game. Tragically, bubble team Simple Minds’ (68 (3)) answer of ‘Chris Everett’ on the Jim Rome question cost them 7 HUGE points, the win, and perhaps nudged them into deciding to NOT play in the finals this year.
Oedipus (47 (4)) suffer an early internal communication failure on the same question that likewise cost them a crucial 7 points. By the time they recovered and began showing their usual form the evening was virtually over.
Ears (62 (2)) enter the 4th quarter holding the lead only to watch it escape for a 5th place finish. Playboys (62 (7)) were a correct #19 away from carrying the lead into the final question, but the wheels came off at that exact moment.
#9’s (59 – (7)) solid home field form escaped them for the time being.
FMAF (34 (1)) fly solo and manage a solid 3 quarters, which is one short of what was needed
Experience (38 (4)) are in a sudden slump brought about by the Ebola virus that ran through their team the last 2 weeks
Gluttons take the stage @ Brewhouse tomorrow in what may their final run at an invitation to this year’s event…
Canton (Brent): For the second straight week, 13 teams played at Bedoe’s, and 8 were/are March Trivia Madness competitors. After their big win last week, Coconuts (72) stayed on fire for 19 questions tonight but were sniped at the end… by Hazel Destroy (92), who were sorely in need of a big fat score. Taking 3rd was Red Dead Samurai (66), who are putting together a Performance Points-based tournament that would make The Alliance proud… I’m pretty sure that if I had a trivia night on Neptune, Red would somehow find a way to secure some house cash of some sort…
Muffins (54) were in their usual position to snipe the game on #20, but #20 didn’t go their way… Donkey Balls (40) managed to improve their weekly base score but were playing catch-up most of the night after sputtering on #5 and missing #10… McNuttski (47) seems to get better each time they play, and were in position to take 2nd on #20 (despite a complete meltdown on #15), but couldn’t find the correct answer. I fully endorse their aggressive play, however… it’ll reward them more than punish them in the long run. If they were better at music trivia, they’d be a nasty team to deal with. Seoul Sisters (47) make it out and like everyone else, was in it until the end, but I don’t think they care right now… They’re still exuberant just to be on the scoreboard.
Speaking of the scoreboard, Challenged (52) finished in a tie for 5th with G-Unit and went to overtime to decide the invite to MTM… Challenged won the invite and paid on the spot, a bit of a surprise given their inauspicious start to the tournament, but they were a surprisingly good team in last year’s big game, and if they round up their full squad, they’re dangerous and still appropriately feared by every other team in Canton. They haven’t been full strength since what seems like last summer, but if it happens, watch out… Anyway, it’s nice to have ’em back in the big game again this year.
Challenged is team #32! 3 spots left… Gluttons & Jimmy Jams will be playing tomorrow… Will they get it done before time runs out? Will Maroons qualify in Grayson? Will perpetually invited but never paid team Balls of Steel join in Carrollton? Will tomorrow be the last day we see invites going out? Wednesday could be a big day… Stay tuned…
