MTM XI Week 3, Tuesday update

Tuesday saw TJ take the night off, Bobby host in Gainesville, and every other FCT host show up to Bedoe’s in what wound up a wildly entertaining and mistake-filled game.

Gainesville: Pabst Playboys finally beat #9, but still can’t snare the invite which instead goes to Simple Minds’ 91 point score.  Simple Minds are on the bubble, but a poor week 1 and a no-show last week might put them in a bit of a precarious situation on the leaderboard.  #9 take 3rd with 80 and vault to 2nd place on the leaderboard.

Canton: 13 teams played at Bedoe’s, with more than half either already in the tournament  or aiming for a spot (not to mention teams like Ramrod and Posse who are as capable of winning as anyone).  Is MTM 7 teams in one location the most we’ve seen so far?  I’m not sure, but it seems like a lot.  Migrating Coconuts have been looking for an invite from day 1, and seem to have bad luck of choosing when to play – they either can’t get their entire team together or they show up when a bunch of other unqualified teams are on fire.  In fact, with it slowly becoming a reality that they might not qualify, I even discussed some Plan B’s with them pre-game.  The other 6 were all teams to be reckoned with – Ray-Ray, Red Dead Samurai, Hazel Destroy, McNuttski, and road trips from top 10 teams Alliance and Much Ado About Muffins.

The game was as entertaining as I hoped.  Muffins held the lead for pretty much the entire game, but Alliance closed the gap in the 4th Q and the two rivals were deadlocked 65-65 after 19 questions.  The others were all within striking distance…

On a WWII themed #20,  Muffins’ luck in Canton seems to still be going strong.  The last time Muffins cared about any scores from Canton was last fall’s World Cup of Trivia when the High Rollers underbid on a tragic correct #20 and allowed the Muffins to advance to the final four when they were all but beaten… Tonight, Muffins crossed off the correct answer on #20, and 3 teams within striking distance all got it right… But only 2 bid enough to pass them.  Once again, a 10 point correct bid from an unsure opponent, this time McNuttski (61) -and unless I misread the scoresheet, it’s a bid I just can’t figure out – allowed Muffins (64) to stay in the money.  3 performance points go their way, and after the cross-off on #20, they’ll take it… McNuttski continue to show two characteristics – intelligence and inexperience…  One will can carry you far – #20 tonight was not easy even to guess on and they got it right… The other can sink you – seasoned teams take the time to write down other scores and do the math ahead of time…  Once it clicks, it’ll be clicked forever and McNuttski will be 15-20 points better per game…

The two teams that jumped the Muffins?  Red Dead Samurai (74) seems to be in the money no matter who shows up to play against them these days, and tonight’s 2nd place finish was no exception…  Winning was the Migrating Coconuts (77).  It warms my heart to see Coconuts get their invite… And it wasn’t cheap – if you knock off Alliance, Muffins, Ray-Ray, Red, Hazel Destroy, and McNuttski, you have earned your invite to MTM.  Coconuts did just that, and they had the money ready on the spot.  Migrating Coconuts are team #25!

I’m getting the impression that this week is going to be a week that favors the teams that play several games.  Muffins, Alliance, Red, McNuttski, Hazel, Ray-Ray, Donkeys, Coconuts – all these teams started out with <50 points in their first game… Any that have played twice improved things… Most weeks favor teams that play several times, of course, but everyone seems to be slow out of the gate this week in particular.

Also, Night At The Movies II is coming up in early March… If you’re into movie trivia, keep it on your radar… If you don’t know what that is, ask your host at the next FCT game you attend.

Alright, scoreboard time!
