Canton: High Rollers start the night by letting their bubble burst, only to renew it with style by pistol-whipping the room. Rollers started off slow (like everyone) and then put the hammer down starting with question 7. At the half, they led 41-26. After 3, it was 69-44. Going into #20, it was 87-53… An impressive effort from a team that had inexplicably not been interested in the tournament. Tonight potentially changed that. Rollers’ score is stymied a bit by their 33 point opening week score, but that’s better than nothing, and they can work with it. As many of you remember, Rollers reached the top 8 in the World Cup and were it not for one timid bid on #20, would have dispatched the Muffins and made the final 4… The High Rollers are a perfect MTM team – they suck at sports and music, but March Trivia Madness often allows you to suck at those, because those categories are SO difficult on Super Saturday… H-R are strong in history, geography, literature, science… They’re a team to be reckoned with.
In their path were Red Dead Samurai, who snagged 3rd with a sub-par 48… They’ll send big Mike out later this week to improve on that. McNuttski seems to be in a post-payment funk (46, 4th). Perhaps Challenged could help counsel them with that. Last year, Challenged was unstoppable until they paid to enter the tournament, at which point they were a drumbeat of 50 point scores… McNuttski is encouraged to get out later this week and attend another game. Averaging 40-50 points per week can be death on your cumulative and leave you without many chairs at the finals… Coconuts finish right behind ’em with 45 points… (according to the scoresheet, if Coconuts and McNuttski had played together tonight, they finish with 81 points… Just something to think about)…
Carrollton: Angry Planners continue to post winning scores (82), their 3rd in as many weeks. Cartel De Jesus takes 2nd with 57. Alliance, winners on Sunday in Carrollton, can’t make it 2 in a row but manage to swipe 3rd with 43. Those performance points will help in what is shaping up to be an exciting Cumulative battle in a wide open field…
Avondale: WC, B allow their bubble to burst – but I would’ve fainted had they entered and then made them spend a week thinking it over after missing week #1.
Stepdads, also a week #1 no-show thrashed the room with a 106 – (Oedipus finished 2nd with 75 , BBvBoe 3rd with 71) and pay to enter the tournament – a BIG SURPRISE!
We spent 10 full minutes discussing the risks of entering with that kind of obstacle looming, but they were game anyway.
Truth be told, the way they played tonight was as impressive a single performance as I’ve seen this year… They were perfect except for 2 songs on #5 and 2 songs on #15 and a hedged 12 point #20.. That’s PERFECT and I asked a tweaked version of the game from Amici just to be sure they hadn’t heard it.
Muffins (33) and Donkey Balls (38) would probably rather we pretend they didn’t play…
Ok, scoreboard time. Stepdads makes it 24 teams. You have to expect B8shaq and Jimmy Jams to enter this week… Will Maroons show up somewhere, qualify, and pay? Will Seoul Sisters and Coconuts get into this thing (how Seoul Sisters have not been able to put a full team together at Darby’s trivia yet, I have no idea; Coconuts seem to have rotten luck so far on just about everything)? High Rollers will probably take their sweet time, but will spots be left on Monday? Gluttons, Boston Braves… These are teams that could also enter.
Not enough spots, even less time to procure them, it seems.
And remember, your cumulative score dictates how many seats you get at the big game… It’s something worth playing for – TRUST ME…
