Week 9 – Wednesday

Brent: Ray-Ray stretches their win streak to 5 despite a pedestrian music night (by their standards). #10 stakes them a big lead which they never surrender. 102, 9 performance, 6 attn. B8shaq plays a similar game to their Tuesday effort – lurking near the leaders for most of the night, but this time they cash it in on #20 for 80 points and 2nd (6 bonus, 2 attn). Non-tourney team Smarty Pints take 3rd with 76.

Challenged blow 2nd by getting #20 right for only 2 pts (Minor Alliance just chuckled) and finish with 65 (7 attn). Red can’t get a full team together lately and they stall out with 43 (2 attn).

That’s all for tournament teams as the cumulative phase in Canton comes to an end…

Bryan: Our old friends Taking Back Trivia beam down from the mothership and snatch 1st place loot and bonus points away from What’s My Name (64 & 2nd)

Bobby: Brewhouse – Big crowd plays an entertaining game with a less than predictable finsih. All the major players were in attendance and most were at relatively full strength.

In the end, Stepdads(96) and Chick Filatio duel in OT for top honors and the Chicks deflate the Stepdads balloon a tad by taking down 1st place. Perhaps a bitter pill for the Stepdads to swallow given their cumulative struggles, but in the end what happened was the ‘dads reminded themselves that even in a jam packed room, at the toughest venue on the FCT itenerary, they can win. Bobby Brown (85), Muffins (86), Tip (59), Boston Braves (73), Buckhead Rednecks (49), United (63), and Kramerica (88 – 3rd) – a virtual who’s who of Full Contact Trivia teams, spent the entire evening staring at ‘Stepdads’ backside.

Not to be lost in all of this was Chick shaking off a long string of decent, but cashless performances. Solid and admirable – well done.

This actually makes real a point I have made about tournament teams in the past and still believe wholeheartedly – every team has a chance.

I can count on both hands the number of finals teams that I truly believe had no shot. There are ZERO this year.

Some of you will play like shit on Super Saturday, some just won’t get questions they like, some will melt down for this reason or that … but EVERY year, there is the team that finishes 10 – 15 spots higher than anyone would have dreamed.

MTM III winner Yosef spent the entire cumulative without a lick of house cash only to be crowned World Champions.

MTM VIII winner Muffins played like a team that miiiiight finish in the top half their inagural cumulative run. They did, boy howdy – did they ever.

I’ve predicted teams to finish in last place only to watch them finish in the top 10 (a very raw Ray-Ray comes to mind as I type this)..

Sometimes it’s the teams that go in loose, have a few beers and enjoy themselves like a normal trivia evening that have the planets line up at just the right time.

Stepdads can win this thing… and so can your team.

The news within the news is United play their worst game and probably clinch the cumulative anyway. They are not mathematically clear yet, but none of the contenders stepped up in a meaningful way to make their stumbling evening matter. It wound up being a push, and if we push the rest of the week, guess who wins? In the end it’s as if the top teams didn’t show up.
